Proposal
Proposal
The name of my magazine is going to be ‘Focus’ because my
magazine is focusing on what my audience enjoys the most and what is popular
for young people ( 16-20 ) during these days. The sub-genre of my magazine is
Pop which links with the tittle of my magazine because the magazine will focus
on Pop music and the fashion around it that young people enjoy. The features
provided in my magazine will connect with my ideal reader who enjoys interests
such as: Makeup, Fashion, Nicki Minaj, Ellie Goulding, Instagram, Twitter,
Concerts and many more that is shown on my created mood bored. My target
audience will mainly be aimed for young females aged 16+ who live in the UK.
As my magazine will be a Pop magazine, I have researched the
publisher of a similar genre magazine called ‘We love Pop’. This magazine is a Hybrid
– Genre magazine like mine as I will be presenting fashion and music together
in one magazine. We love Pop is published by Egmont who would publish my
magazine as I have the same genre as similar features as this magazine would
have too. My magazine will clearly represent the Pop music genre, with
varieties of fashions and artists that connects to the Pop genre. The magazine
that I will create will show respect of the different groups of society, but
may not appeal to some because of the Pop fashion and music that will be
presented will be shown consistently throughout my magazine. As I have shown
that I want to make my magazine based on fashion and music, I will mainly focus
on Pop music, with highlights of the latest fashion updates. I would like to
make my magazine as eye-catching as possible and noticeable so that it would
stand out from other magazines and therefore be picked up instead of other Pop
magazines.
As my magazine will be distributed through print on paper, I
will allow a website link to be shown on the magazine so that my audience can
go online and interact with the magazine creating audience participation by
getting involved with any updates or competitions by browsing the website
themselves.
From looking at research at other Pop magazines, the average
price is about £2.99. I wouldn’t make my magazine this price because in my
opinion I think it is too expensive for my target audience therefore I would
make the price about £1.50 allowing the young people to afford the magazine and
be happy with the suitable price. Also, as there would be a weekly edition, it
is important that I keep the price suitable so that my audience can keep up
with affording the editions every week. As some magazines are expensive as they
provide freebies and merchandise, they need to keep the cost up to keep
providing the free products, whereas in my magazine I will just keep to the
winning of competitions and holidays as I feel that my audience would feel much
happier winning something exciting rather than a small free product, that way I
can keep the price down as well because there would be no free products to sort
out.
To make my magazine stand out and unique against any other
magazine, on my first issue I would be advertising a number to call to be given
free tickets to visit London along with spending in money for the popular high
street shop ‘Topshop’. I will make this clear on the front cover to attract my
audience to my front cover to by the magazine instead of any other Pop
magazine.

Masthead Fonts experiement.
I have decided to go with this Font and colour because the style fits my hybrid genre of my magazine as I am doing a fashion and music magazine. I think this font suits the style because it is classy and easy to read but has a slight detail to make it look exciting. I think it is vert presently to be my masthead for my front cover as it will fit in with the images used and the style my magazine will be in.
I have chosen to stick with different tones of purple because in my survey, the colours purple black and white came up popular therefore i cam going to stick with a basic black and white background with a purple masthead. I have chosen to use the colour purple for my masthead becuase it is a bold colour that will stand out against the simple blck and white background and also because my magazine is targeted to females aged 16+ , so this colour will fit in with the age and gender as it is a sophisticated colour suitable for my target audience.

Definitions
Genre - The way a magazine is constructed ( put together) such as what images and colours are used that link to the themed text that belong to separate different themes. This can be important for example, when distinguishing between a Heavy metal magazine and a Rock magazine, which can deal with similar subject matter and may slightly look the same, but have a separate genre to them
A media text is said to belong to a genre, as it adopts the codes and conventions of other texts in the genre, and lives up to the same expectations.
This is an example of Rock Genre as it is a magazine that shows ranges of Rock music.
Sub Genre - Further categorises a genre into a specialist area. For example Kerrang is a metal magazine which is a sub-genre of Rock.
An example of this is A pop magazine called 'We love Pop'.
A media text is said to belong to a genre, as it adopts the codes and conventions of other texts in the genre, and lives up to the same expectations.

Hybrid Genre - When two genres conbine into one magazine, for example when fashion and music are put together into one magazine.

Summer Photos for music magazine.
From looking at my survey, High Street Stores such as River Island and Topshop seem popular for young people to shop at, therefore this image is good because it is an image of Manchester Centre where all the high street shops are.
This image is good because it will be part of my meet and greet feature page.
As part of the competition feature, these pictures are good because they show different tourist attractions in London that I can use for my competition to win a trip to London.
These images are also good because again they will link with the competition page as a chance to win a holiday to Egypt. This will be a good feature as my audience enjoy going on holiday.
These images will either be used for my main image on my front cover or my contents page. I have chose these pictures because they are all clear facial or body shots that will go well with my magazine.

Double page spread analysis

There is only one image used in this double page spread to automatically inform the reader who the article is based on. The image looks as if it has been taken at a slight low angle at a mid shot, to imply the character is strong, and almost as if he has power of the page as the text is based on the character.
There is a consitant house style used made of pinks and white which may imply that the article is for female readers as we usually relate pink as a femanim colour. The denotaion of the tattoos on the characters arm my connect to the idea of him having power as having that lot amount of tattoos shows that you must be a strong person. The connotation of this represents the genre of music he plays, for example Rock music.
The connotations of the colour pink usually symbolises love and affection and calmness which relates to the word 'Casual' used in the Pull Quote as it make show that although he is in a loud rock band, he may have a calm loving personality.
All of the colours contrast each other highlighting the text form the different headings and sub-headings.
The pull quote used " Do I ever have a casual Friday?, Absolutely" links to the character used in the made image, as his body language looks relaxed as he looks slightly leant back. He looks causal the way he is present as he doesn't look like he has any stiffness in his body. Anchorage is presented here as his body language connects to the quote that he feels casual.

Contents page evaluation
For my preliminary task i was asked to produce a front cover and contents page for a new college magazine. I believe I was successful in completing my contents page by including many features that came up popular whilst doing a quesstionair to find out the interests students have in my class. I used a range of features to make my magazine contents page look exciting and detailed such as winning money for the most popular High Street shop 'Topshop'. I used a consistent house style both for my contetns page and front cover, and stuck to lighter femain colours as it suits the gender audience my magazine is mainly directed at. I used clear and safisicated fonts that is clear and easy to read on my front cover and my contents page, so the audience have a clear sense of what they are reading. I tried to vary the style of fonts to make the text look more exciting to read instead of the orginal standard text that everyone is used to reading. I used approrpiate language suitable for the target audience as that is very important that the reader can clearly understand and that it is suitable for them. Although i have only limited my images to one on each page, they are appropriate for the magazine style. I would improve on this when i create my music magazine, but adding more images to the front cover and the contents, that links to the features advertised, to make the page look more exciting and interesting, and also to preview the reader what they are going to see on that certain page. Also, on my contents page, I didnt set my page numbers out apprropriately as they are all in random order, so in my music magazine i would create a suitable order so that the numbers are equally spread out, to make my page look more presentable, and also to help the reader find what they are looking for alot easier. I would also improve the layout of my contents page by putting the different page features into labelled sections. For examnple, I would put all the competition features in a competition section with a clear tag of what this section provides. I may also use a more define use of font by sticking to a certain basic tone, that is suitable for both genders so anyone can feel comfortable reading the magazine.
Overall, I am happy with my contents page desgin, but i would definately make improvments if i was to do this again.

Front cover evaluation
For my preliminary task, I was asked to produce a Magazine front cover and a contents page for a new collee magazine. I believe that i have been successful with creating my front cover although i do feel that i could improve on a number of things that I would then adapt to, to help my music magazine look a lot better and more presentable. I have used a variety of features in my front cover that relate to my questionnaire I produced to find out different hobbies and interests that my media class enjoy. This aloud me to advertise the interests that were the most popular, to make my magazine exciting for students to read. I used a variety of colour and fonts to make each feature contrast against each other. I decided to use a plain background so that any text or images would stand out alot more bolder and also more clear to read. I think I was successful doing this because it allows the text to look more exciting. Although, if i was to improve on this, I would keep the plain backgound but use the colour white, to make my images and text look more bright and bigger. I would also stick to a certain range of colour scheme instead of different colours, to keep the consist house style that I can refer to in my magazine. I would also add alot more pictures to my front cover that relates to the advertised features so that the audience have an idea on who or what the feature presents. I feel there is a lot of empty spaces on my front cover so if i was to improve then I would make sure my page is packed with lots of exciting bright features and relative images. One of the main things that I feel have success with is the barcode that I created in the bottom right corner because I have stuck to the rule of no images from the internet so i created it myself on Publisher.

Front cover analysis
The
main image of this magazine has been taken at a slight low angle that looks up
at the character creating tension and power towards the image used. Also at a
mid shot also known as a social shot, showing the body and facial language
clearly. There
are numerous secondary images shown on this magazine to bring more detail to
the page, and to fill up spaces instead of more text.
The
colours used are mainly black and red. The connotation of the colour red can represent
blood or anger which symbolises the image the lyrics create. Also the connotation
of the colour black can represent dark and depression emotions which could relate
to the genre of music that the band plays.
The
denotations of these bold colours all contrast from each other which is good
because although they are different tones of colours, they still stand out massively
against each other. The red colour stands out the most compared to the rest of
the colours as it is clearly shown that the parts that are in red have the most
important information. For example “30 Seconds to mars” this is the name of the
band which is in red which as it is the brightest colour used on the page. This
is important that the name of the band is show in a clear contrasting colour
towards the background so it shows the audience straight away what the magazine
is focused on. The pug is also red which is important as well because there is
a promotion for meeting one of the band members which links to focus of the
band. The colour red that is used quiet a lot on the front of the magazine may
imply the emotion of music the band may play because the colour red is quiet a
negative colour.
The
text used for the name of the magazine has been edited. The denotation of this
is that it makes the title stand out and represents the logo of the magazine
itself. Because there is such detail in this font, it stands out the most to
all the other colours used on the page.
There
is direct eye contact show from the characters face, straight at the audience
that is looking at the magazine. This may make the reader feel on level with the
character but also underestimated as it looks as if the character is looking
down at the reader to show he is a powerful character along with his band as there
is a slight overlook towards the audience. Also, the use of body language used
from the character shows that he is in power by the hand gestured used. The connotation
of this is that the character is in power.
By looking
at the different images used on this magazine, shows the anchorage of the
magazine itself focusing on heavy metal magazine shown by the facial expressions
and colours used on the different images. The design used in the tittle of the
magazine ‘Kerrang” looks as if the words have been broken or smashed as it imitates
a smashed window. This shows anchorage as the title Kerrang itself doesn’t represent
anything but with the detail used on it links to the heavy metal genre of
magazine, and also links with the power and expression the character is show as
the main image.
The
house style used fits well with the image because of the strong but negative colours
which connects to the style of music played by the promoted band.
One
of the pull quotes used such as “I nearly choked” connects with the connotation
of the colour red which links to blood which relates to death. This shows
informal and indirect text that happened to a real person and the story is
provided inside the magazine. It is indirect because there is no use of the
word ‘you’ used in any of the pull quotes.

Rule of third
Rule of Third
The rule of third is one of the main ‘rules’ in art and photographic composition and stems from the theory that the human eye naturally gravitates to intersection parts that occur when an image is split into thirds.
To define this comparison technique as a guideline rather than a rule but for the sake of consistency with other photography sources.
Photos are divided into thirds with two imaginary lines vertically and two lines horizontally making three columns, three rows and nine sections in the images. Important compositional elements and leading lines are placed on or near imaginary lines and where the lines intersect.

Aquinas questionnaire
10) Sushi seems to be the most common food that people dont like, therefore i may use this as an article on how sushi is becoming banned. This would create humour and entertain in my magazine as it is something the audience can connect to and agree with.
Aquinas Quesstionaire
7) Topshop/Topman is the most popular clothes shop therefore i will feautre this in my magazine by showing the latest season of clothing range at Topshop.
8) Football is the most popular hobbie, along with going to the gym so i may feature and article about sport.
9) Media is the most popular course at college, along with ICT, therefore i will offer an article in my magazine about a Media/ICT course throughtout the christmas period for students to take part in at the college.
Aquinas Questionnaire
4) Most people enjoy going out with their friends, going to gigs and concerts, and to read, therefore i would feature a competition to win tickets to a gig or concert with some friends as this seems to be the most popular thing to do in their spare time.
5) Tribes and The courteeners are the most popular band, i may add this as a feature in my magazine although i may chose another artist/band because they all seem to near enough the same. I would show an article about a certain artist/band about something exciting that has happened for them.
6) Chinease is the most popular food. I could use this as a feature in magazine by writing an article about new chinease resturant opening in a popular place.
Aquinas Quesstionaire
2) The most popular film genre is Horror from looking at my research. In my magazine i would advertise a new Horror film that is comin out in the cinema.
3) The two most popular social networking sites are Twitter and Facebook. I wouldnt use this as a feature in my magazine but i may use one of the networking sites as part of a promotion or a competition.
